The National Institute of Mental Health (formerly Mental Hospital, Angoda) is a state run hospital functioning under the Ministry of Healthcare and Nutrition.

Established in 1927, it is Sri Lanka’s largest tertiary care institution catering exclusively to the mental health needs of the population. With a capacity of 900 beds and the support of about 500 dedicated staff members, we currently care for over 1000 residential patients.

It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to this website.

The National Institute of Mental Health formally known as the Mental Hospital, Angoda, was built during Victorian times in 1925 and was opened for patients from 31st of January 1929.

Though initially it had functioned smoothly, due to overcrowding and unavailability of medications prior to the ECT (electro convulsive therapy) and chlorpromazine era, it gradually ended up a typical lunatic asylum in a developing country.

Ten years ago, if some one told you that The National Institute of Mental Health had won a prize as one of the best hospitals in the country you would be forgiven for not believing it. However not in the year 2008, as the once infamous Angoda hospital beat it’s much more fashionable and established peers and took away two major honours at the recently concluded National Health Excellence Awards 2007.

The World Mental Health day falls on 10th of October with the theme for 2009 being – "Mental health in primary care: enhancing treatment and promoting mental health".

Hand in hand with global celebrations the National Institute of Mental Health organized an exhibition of paintings, photographs and handicrafts showcasing the talents and skills of mentally ill patients throughout the country at the National Art Gallery on 10th - 12th October 2009.
