The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) is a state-run hospital functioning under the Ministry of Healthcare and Nutrition.
Our mission is to put patients first. The institute plays an integral role in Sri Lanka by providing specialized psychiatric services to the community with professionalism and care, and is the centre for mental health training and research in the country.
Established in 1927, it is Sri Lanka’s largest tertiary care institution catering exclusively to the mental health needs of the population. With the support of our dedicated health care professionals, we currently care for close to 1,500 residential patients at both our locations in Angoda and Mulleriyawa.
The recent introduction of several specialized units further strengthens the routine psychiatric services offered by the institute. These include:- Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit
- General Medical Ward
- Geriatric Psychiatry Unit
- Perinatal Psychiatry Unit
- Learning Disability Unit
To help us with our ongoing commitment towards improving patient services, we work closely with many non-governmental organizations such as the World Health Organization, Basic Needs, Nest and Voluntary Services Overseas.
NIMH is also proud to have recently been awarded the bronze medal at the 2010 National Health Excellence Awards in the curative care, large scale health institution category.
