Spread over a spacious 15 hectare land in Angoda(15 km from Colombo), the facility is designed to allow patients maximum freedom while ensuring their safety.

The general psychiatric wards are arranged in blocks of four with common courtyards allowing patients to mingle with each other and also providing space  for recreational activities.

Each ward has its own rehabilitation room with facilities for leisure activities such as board games and newspaper stands.

Inter connecting corridors lead to the wards through gardens maintained by patients in their respective ward as part of their rehabilitation activities.

The staff at The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) work with dedication and commitment in the midst of great difficulties mainly due to lack of funding and the large number of patients being cared for. As it is the only facility within Sri Lanka with residential facilities for the mentally ill, many patients are brought in for residential treatment from various part of the country.
