NIMH is the largest mental hospital in Sri Lanka and is the primary provider of residential mental health services in the country. It is also the main learning centre for all health professionals such as doctors, nurses, Occupational therapists and social workers.

The training department of NIMH is in the process of developing, coordinating programs for each category of staff as well as generic training for all staff. Also we are developing specific mental health modules as well as training the trainers in order to promote sustainability.

The training department of NIMH consists of 3 training facilitators, Saman (nursing officer), Dr M. Ganesan (Consultant Psychiatrist), supported by Nanthini Sivanesan (VSO volunteer.)  

Mission of the training section follows

  • To train and develop the staff of NIMH in client centered and recovery oriented mental health care.
  • Mental health workers in the nine provinces use more client-centered and rehabilitation-focused approaches
  • Newly trained mental health workers and non-mental health workers are trained using interactive and practical methodologies.
  • To strengthen inter-sectoral networking, learning and sharing nationally and internationally.
  • Collaborative working between educational institutions of allied health professionals and NIMH, to promote mental health modules in curriculum developments and training.
  • To ensure involvement of consumers and family in all service provision in Colombo district /Western Province

The initial six weeks of the programme includes lectures, workshops and clinical case discussions. There will be several ward based teaching sessions and field visits to specialized NIMH units and agencies involved in Mental Health Care.

The trainees will then be assigned to wards for clinical training under a consultant psychiatrist for a further six weeks.
